POETRY ANTHOLOGY DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY 2-22

February 15, 2012

In addition to the cover page, introduction, and 2 page reflection, you must have at least 7 original, annotated poems that follow the guidelines below:
Poem types/qualities:

1.       Poem about poetry styled like Naruda’s “Poetry”

-free verse, repetition, strong verbs

 

2.       Coming-of-age poem like Giovanni’s “Nikki Rosa” and Lauryn Hill’s “Every Ghetto Every City”

-free verse, imagery, diction (specific to YOUR childhood places, games, etc.)

 

3.       Passion/hobby poem like Edward Hirsch’s “Fast Break”

-free verse; imagery; jargon, diction and strong verbs specific to your hobby/passion that enhance the effect of the action in the poem

 

4.       Extended metaphor poem like Julio Polanco’s “Identity”

-free verse, any topic, strong verbs, must include two things compared throughout via extended metaphor

 

5.       Hyperbole and allusion poem like Giovanni’s “Ego Tripping”

-must include allusions and at least 2 hyperboles, any topic, include allusions about topics you know best!

 

6.       Ode poem like Neruda’s “Ode to My Socks” and Cisneros’ “Abuelito Who”

-pays tribute to someone or something you think deserves honor

 

7.       Free choice poem-you can use regular or irregular rhyme

Be sure to annotate the typed poems to point out any time you add/delete/use:

Unusual line breaks (think about “We Real Cool”), enjambment

Refrains

Stanzas

Figurative language-simile, metaphor, personification

Imagery

Allusion

Hyperbole

Rhyme scheme

Sound devices-alliteration, assonance, consonance

Jargon, strong verbs or nouns

Tomorrow in class you may write any pieces to fill-in the gaps, and on Friday and Monday we have computer lab time to type or design covers. The entire anthology must be typed, the poems must be annotated, the reflection and introduction must be 12pt. Times New Roman or Arial font and double spaced, and the cover must be well-designed and tie in to your anthology.  NOTICE PARALLEL STRUCTURE IN THAT SENTENCE???  :)

Label helping verbs with HV
Label main verbs with MV

In the margins, indicate LV for a linking verb or AV for an action verb.

Your root word vocab. is due Thursday, and we will quiz on it Friday. Use google to search the root words in addition to prefixsuffix.com and learnthat.org

Today in class we anticipated and then read "Nikki Rosa" by Nikki Giovanni. We annotated Giovanni's  diction, imagery, and use or lack of punctuation and capitalization for effect. Tomorrow we will listen to a song by Lauryn Hill that is similar to the poem. You begin writing a narrative poem about your upbringing that reveals your characte...

Pick 1-2 ideas offered in the essay that you are willing to try to inspire you with poetry writing.

Finish reading, annotating, and writing a response to above as homework, which is due on Tuesday.
